Welcome to Cattle Dog Behavior

Welcome to Cattle Dog Behavior, a website to help you with the behavior problems, general care and training of Aussie Cattle Dogs.

Most dogs have their own behavior problems, not just cattle dogs.  There are though a few also that are particular to the breed and I will be discussing and presenting solutions to those here.

If you are looking for a loyal, intelligent and energetic friend then you can’t go past the Aussie Cattle Dog.

General Information

The Aussie Cattle Dog or Heeler as the breed is also known, is a medium sized dog with strong legs and medium tails and were bred in Australia from a kelpie and a dingo but there are many opinions on that.  They are either blue/gray or red/tan and were used to work the cattle.  They are very tough dogs and can live to over 20 years in some cases.

Temperament

Cattle dog behavior varies from dog to dog but many have got a bad reputation as being a bit snappy.  I think this has come about because they don’t like strangers and are very protective of their owners.  They are also known as blue or red heelers because when they worked with cattle they would nip their hocks (ankles).

Separation anxiety

This can be a problem if left by themselves for a long period and really applies to most dogs and not just to cattle dog behavior. I will discuss some tactics to use to stop this anxiety in the following pages.  Aussie cattle dogs love their family and like to be around them. Also, crate training will help with any worry about separation.

Training your dog

Training your cattle dog should start when they are a puppy.  It is much easier to walk with a lead, house train and general obedience training when they are young.

Cattle dog behavior must be monitored regularly to ensure your dog is a happy and healthy companion to yourself and your family.

Enjoy your lovely cattle dog puppy and spend time with them especially when they are puppies to make sure they are socialized as this will make sure you wont have behavior problems later on when they are grown dogs.
